Christmas stories!

Hey everyone!

Today at the library many of us had a great time reading Christmas stories to everyone in the depot.  Every five minutes someone new would read a Christmas story that they had chosen. We read stories from 1 to 2 and had a great crowd the whole day. There was also some hot cider, milk and tons of cookies for everyone to enjoy. I chose to read If You Take a Mouse to the Movies by Laura Numeroff  which is a great little Christmas book and a great addition to Laura Numeroff's If You Give a... series. This was actually my first time reading in front of so many people and though I was a little nervous at first, I had a great time reading and listening to all the stories.

Tomorrow we will be having another great Christmas themed event. From noon to 2 we will have tables set out so everyone can come in and make a sled ornament to put on your tree or even give as a gift. We'll have markers, magazines, tissue paper and Christmas cards that they can use to personallize their ornamement.  Come on in, make some ornaments and maybe even check out a few Christmas books before you leave.

Have a great day and a wonderful Christmas!

Sonya's Saturday Stories

Hello, everyone. Guess what? Today Santa was at the library!!! We had SO MANY people stop and talk with Santa. We had lots of fun. Remember, for those of you who visited Santa, we will post pictures on Facebook, and for those of you who did not want your picture on Facebook, we will get those pictures developed. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

The other day, a very fashionable girl and her awesome mother said to me, "Where's the Elf?"
... uh...That was certainly a good question! Even I didn't know. Well, today we found him (yay!). He was hiding at Ms. Carol's desk. But now that we found him, he's hidden in a new place. Next time you stop at the library, make sure to keep an eye out for the Elf. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, read this book:
Elf on the Shelf

We're Moving!! Sincerly, The Books

Hello fellow peeps!!

A lot of things have been happening here in the Children's Library over the last few days. For starters, we are getting a lot of new books in for the holidays (which are on the display cart next to the toy area... but they are going fast so make sure you come in and make your holiday selections!)

Next, as the saying goes 'out with the old (or damaged) and in with the new!' As we are approaching the New Year we are preparing our Library for the change as all. How do we do this? We read the shelves, we weed the books, and finally we shift the books to make room for the new books that are coming. However this is quite a time consuming process so for the next few days we hope you will cooperate with our transitions.
So just what does reading the shelves mean??
When we read the shelves we make sure that all of the books are in order and that they will be where they are supposed to be when YOU are looking for a book. Because we all know that a book in the wrong place is a lost book. Being lost is no fun.

What is weeding?
When we weed the shelves we take books off that are damaged, older, or not really what you want to read anymore. We do this for several reason one being that if we didn't pull the damaged books then the quality of books that you check out would not be what we would want for you. Secondly, if we didn't weed the books we would not have enough space to shelve the new books.

What do we do with the books that we weeded?
Well, we try to save as many books as we can. However, sometimes the books are so old and damaged that most of them have to go to the recycling center. However, some can be saved and those we send to the Friends of the Library Bookstore where the books are sold to make money for new books. Then who knows, maybe you were looking for the book that we put down there to complete your series. So you should check out the Bookstore located in the basement of the main Library.

What does shifting the books mean?
After we read and weed the books there is usually a lot of space left where the old and/or damaged books used to be. So we shift all of the books along the way so that everyone has a new and room-ier home. So, essentially all of the books have moved. If you can't find a book you would like to read, just let us know and we will help you find the books. Fiction books and Everybody reads have been moved so far.

So far we are about half way through the fiction and completely done with the Everybody Reads. Here is a picture of the completed Everybody Reads.

Well that's whats going on here. We hope that you are having a great day and have had a good week!!
Next week is THANKSGIVING!! What are you thankful for?
See you soon Peeps!

Wild Wednesday

Hey everyone!
Nikki here!
I have an exciting event everyone needs to mark on their calendars: our annual Breakfast with Santa!
It is going to be December 10, 2011 from 9:30-11:30 in the community room downstairs.  We will have donut holes, milk, juice, and reindeer food! We will also take pictures of the children with Santa! Be sure to come if you can!
I also have an interesting new initiative to share with everyone.  We are starting a campaign to help people with fines bring them down.  It's called Soup for Fines.  Here's how it works: now through December 30, for every one (1) can of soup you donate to the Library, $5.00 will be waved from your overdue balance, up to $50.00.  Interlibrary loan and E-reader fines are ineligible for waiver. All proceeds go to God's Food Pantry.

That's all I have for now!
Until next time!

Fall Garden Party Photos

Hello Everyone!!

Here are some photos from our Fall Garden Party that we had last week. There are more on our facebook page at The Children's Library at the Pulaski County Public Library.
Enjoy!!

Group beginning to form. We had to move inside because the rain and the fall weather hit us hard.

Children participating in our Sack Races. We had several races, a few carpet burns, and a TON of laughs along the night.

Children participating in our Icky Pumpkins. Crushed brains (jello and spaghetti), eyeballs (grapes), and bugs (don't worry. Plastic.) This, as always, was a MAJOR hit.

One of our Icky Pumpkins. This pumpkin was put together by one of our FABULOUS young patrons.

Pulaski County Extension Horticulture Agent Beth Wilson brought some of her worms (YES the real ones) for the kids to see, touch, and learn about. She also brought a wormy snack for the children. THANKS MS. BETH!!

Pulaski County Extension Horticulture Agent Beth Wilson shows off her wormy friends in her composter.

Some little Ladybugs decided to join the festivities. (Ms. Lori would love...)

Last, but not least, this is US. After a long night of fun with our wonderful patrons and library family.
(R-L Top Row: Raeann (Alice), Lindsey (Red Riding Hood), Ms. Carol (Bumble-bee), Ms. Vicki (Soldier/Woodsmen), Nikki (Owl) R-L Bottom Row: Sonya (Pikachu), Alex, Amber)
Thanks for a fabulous yearly tradition everyone!!

Sickly Friday =(

Hello everyone!!

It has been a very busy week around the library. I hope everyone got to attend our annual Fall Garden Party (which turned out to be inside due to the weather.) We were so glad to have so many of you attend and hope you enjoyed yourselves. I know we all enjoyed all of the costumes and the games.

Ms. Carol has been under the weather this week and unable to do classes due to a frog in her throat. One of our little peeps was very concerned and wanted to know just how big the frog was in her throat. Kids are truly amazing persons.
Speaking of being under the weather, I am sure we all have times when we feel ill or a little sick. For me nothing makes me feel better but some Orange Juice, a nice warm bed, and a good book. So here are some of my favorite books to read when I am feeling a little under the weather…

Before I go I have some quick reminders and updates for you guys.  I hope everyone has a spendiferous weekend and if you get a chance stop by the library for some fun. Saturday is going to be one fun filled busy day here.
At 10:30- Love on a Leash Therapy pets will be here to be read to.
At 11:00- We will be having Tales and Turkeys. After you tell a TALE to a wagging TAIL (That's a lot of Tells. Tales? Tails?) make a beautiful Thanksgiving turkey centerpiece!!
Then at 2 Join us for our Free Family Movie. This month is the sequel to a movie about automobiles. McQueen is in for an adventure with his friend the tow truck.

This week we have plenty of fun as well...
On Monday at 5:30- We will be having our Tween Program on Cartooning and Anime with Logan and Sonya.
On Tuesday we will be having our LEGO club from 3:30 to 6:30 in the Children's Library Depot.
Just a friendly reminder there will be no Storytime Classes on Friday November 11TH!!
Also, in observance of Veteran's Day (THANK YOU to all of our Veterans!!!) the Library will be closed.

Anywho, I hope that everyone is feeling healthy and beautiful!!
Remember to keep feeling healthy you must wash your hands frequently, drink plenty of water, and (as always) eat your vegetables (just as Mom says)!!

Have a WoNdER-filled day!!

On finding that Gareth does not have nine lives but does have the ability to visit nine different times and places, Jason eagerly asks to go with him. Together they travel to Ancient Egypt, Roman Britain, pre-Christian Ireland, Imperial Japan, Renaissance Italy, 16th century Peru, late 16th century Isle of Man, 17th century Germany, and America at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. In each place they help someone, often rulers having problems with corrupt or evil officials. Join Jason and Gareth on this exciting adventure of time travel!!!

Weave it to Us...

Oh what a web we weave. Today, Lindsey and I have been having fun with spiders. Well not real spiders. We were fortunate enough to have two bales of hay donated for your library to use for decoration this fall. So... we made spiders. A Momma spider and her baby spider. If you get a chance drive by the Library and see our new friends. They are beside the big oak tree. Momma is Incy and baby is Wincy.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Literacy Bell

Hello Everyone!!

When I posted the earlier blog about the Literacy Bell it occurred to me that perhaps you might like some further information about this wonderful wonderful bell.

First off before we built our new library we wanted to be able to engage the whole community in as many ways as possible, as we are the center of literacy and language in our community. We sought to embrace, encourage, and enable our youngest patrons to be lifelong readers.

Enter the Literacy Bell. The Literacy Bell was lovingly donated in memory of Katherine Hoffman by her children and grandchildren. Its wonderful clear and distinct sound is a symbol for something very special, that incredible and magical moment when a child can make the letters on a page become a word and then that word plays in a sentence and finally that sentence becomes magically a story.

Ringing the bell has become a statement in our community that literacy, language, and lifelong reading equals success and is important to us! Ours is the original Literacy Bell in the United States. However, Georgia and a few other states have Literacy Bell's now as well.

In our community there are 3 public school systems, a Christian school, and a large home-schooled population. All students from each type of education are eligible to be a "bell ringer."
A coupon to ring the bell is given to each student after they have read a book from the list of selected books to a designated person at their school or home school. They also receive a sticker that reads, "I read my first book." The coupon is brought to the Library and allows the bell to be unlocked. The child writes their name and the date in the "Book of Names."

"It began with a wish, evolved into a dream, and is now a symbol of literacy for a small town."

With today's Literacy Bell we had over 100 new readers!!
Congratulations to our NEW readers!!

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you will go." ~Dr. Seuss

Anywho, I hope this helps.
Lindsey!!

Copper, by Kazu Kibuishi
This book is for you comic lovers! Join Copper and his dog, Fred, as they go on some of the craziest adventures. Copper is bright and optomistic, and Fred, well... isn't. These two friends certainly get into odd situations, though. Find out what their up to at the library!!!

Wildlife

What a beautiful day. It seems the animals think so too. Coming to work this morning I saw 5 deer, a squirrel, a rabbit, 5 ducks, and 2 dogs. I think the animals are gathering food and storing up for the winter.

It's a wildlife, so take a walk and maybe you will see some animals too. The children's library has some great books on Kentucky animals so check us out.

Have fun.
Ms. Vicki

From all of the ringmasters here in the Children's Library, we would like to wish our fellow ringmaster Sonya a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

Wacky Wednesday!

Hello blogosphere!
Nikki here!
How are you all enjoying YOUR Fall Break?
I just want to share with you guys how OUR Fall Break at the Library is going!
As the title of this post says, today has been a pretty wacky wednesday! We had Toddler Tales at 9:30 and Storytime at 10:30 this morning. We had about 30 wonderful library users for our classes this morning. After classes, we set up for gaming in the Depot which started at 1. At 1:30, we had Hopkins Elementary after school program stop by for a visit. They had a blast playing on the Wii's!  At 2:30, one of our fantastic patrons came by and donated 2 hay bales for us to make into spiders to decorate for fall and 3 square bales to decorate our Children's Garden! Shew, that's a lot of stuff and it's only 3:30! I can't wait to see what the rest of the day has in store for us!
We have had so many great visitors this week at the library.  We love it when people come to see us!
Monday we did ALIEN AUTOPSIES! Let me tell you, that was soooo much fun! Today we are having gaming in the Depot from 1-5 pm. If you can make it, you should come on down!
If you haven't been able to make it to the library over your fall break yet, don't fret, we still have stuff planned for this week! Thursday, we have our regularly scheduled Lusic at 5:30 and Stories at 6. Friday, October 7th from 1-2 pm we will be making edible pumpkin treats, so be sure to stop by and make your own.
We look forward to seeing you guys stop by and enjoy YOUR library!
~Nikki
P.S. Don't forget our Fall Party in the Garden! It will be so much fun! We are going to be having stories at 6, games, treats, and a movie at 7:30-ish! Feel  free to come in costume! FREE and open to the public!

Sonya's Saturday Stories

Oh my goodness! Today was so awesome! Not because it's Saturday, but because we had all kinds of things happening at the library. We had Love on a Leash, donut holes, a movie, and... We decorated pumpkins!!! We had fun today, and we hope you have a fun day, too.
Did you miss all the action today? Well, fear not! Monday is our Tween Program at 5:30 pm. What are we doing, you ask? We are doing Alien Autopsies. Woah. Is that cool, or what?! We hope to see you there.
By the way, while we're disecting our aliens, you ought to check out this book (literally!).
A Field Guide to Aliens, by Johan Olander
Have you ever noticed strange words spelled out in the night sky? Do you know which alien can't be alone? are you sure that a Knutt has never played a prank on you? Find out all of that and more in this delightfully eerie collection of extraterrestrial lore.

We hope to see you on Monday! Don't forget to pick up your pumpkin if you painted one today.

Till Next Saturday,

Reach for the Clouds

There is a chill in the air and Fall Break is right around the corner. So if you have some free time to be outdoors now is a great time for cloud watching. I spotted a cloud that could be a dinosaur but my family thought it was a bear or maybe a blob. That's the fun of it. Spend some family time and find your cloud. A good book to check out would be...

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Judith Viorst
Poor Alexander starts his terrible day off with gum in his hair, he drops his sweater in the sink and he knows it’s going to be one of THOSE days. So starts the terrible day of one grumpy Alexander. As his day goes on Alexander faces several other things that contribute to his horrible, no good, very bad day. Several times Alexander vows to move to Australia, especially when he is forced to sleep in his railroad pajamas… he HATES his railroad pajamas. However, Alexander moves on to discover that some days are like that, even in Australia.

Rainy days and Mondays.......

Oh the places I go ....today I visited the preschoolers at Northern Elementary , Miss Tina's and Miss Daphne's crews ,and what a joy they were! We read books about fall and they had me convinced they were at least first graders. Later this week I am visiting Eubank Elementary's morning news show to talk about all things library. On Friday I will join the 4th and 5thn graders at The Carnegie Community Arts Center. Outreach is an important part of what a librarian does, outreach allows us to see and be seen , it's inspiring and FUN! Look for me out and about and remember:

Sonya's Saturday Stories

Hello, everyone! Sonya here. Is everyone ready for fall break? I know I am! But it's always fun to see your friends when you return to school, right? While we're all waiting for Fall Break, why not visit the library and check out this book :

It is Rafe's first day of middle school. Ugh. Rafe Katchadorian just wants to get through the year without dying of boredom! But he has a plan. With the help of his friend, Leo, Rafe is going to make a game out of breaking every single rule in the book. That is, every rule in the Middle School's Code of Conduct Handbook. That way, there will never be a dull moment for him as he trudges through middle school. But will this rule-breaking game be worth it? Even the consequences he'll have to pay? On top of that, life at home isn't so great. With a mom that works all the time, a step-dad that just sits around watching T.V. all day, and a sister who gets her nose into everything... And then Rafe breaks a rule that gets the attention of the police. Is it game over? Find out when you read it!

Remember: Preschool Classes are starting back up next week!

Fall Into It

This is Miss Vicki. Today is the first day of Fall. The air is chily, the leaves are colorful and the apples are just right. While continuing our apple theme this week everyone has had the opportunity to enjoy a trip to Haney's Appledale Farm. Now what do we do will all the apples we got while at the farm? Hmm... Caramel covered apples? Fried apples? Baked apples? Applesauce? Or maybe something different, Wormy Apple Croissants. Yummy!
